Poodle aggression issues may pop up often and if your poodle is being aggressive for some reason, you need to address it without delay.

The consequences of you procrastinating to take action on aggressive poodle behavior may be not only scary but also dangerous.

There may be many reasons due to which your poodle may be showing aggression.  It may be something that was triggered while you poodle was still a puppy and that issue never got resolved like an attack from another dog.  Or it may be because the dog never really accepted you as the alpha leader and is having dominance issues.

The Source of Aggressive Poodle Behavior

Poodle aggression may begin to take shape even when a puppy poodle is as young as only 6 weeks old. At this crucial age a puppy needs to be socialized with other dogs and needs to be given basic training on not to bite other people… or dogs… Depending on the progress of the puppy, this may have to be done until t is 14 weeks old and there might still be a need of extending beyond that age if the puppy has not truly understood that biting hurt on the other end and that it should stop.

In order to achieve this, there are some things you need to look at. First things first, it not OK to take the poodle puppy away from its litter before 8 weeks of age. A poodle between the age of 8 – 10 weeks should be dealt with very gently and no harsh discipline should be used. Aggressive poodle behavior may develop over time as a result of being hit or yelled at within an early age of 8 – 10 weeks.

If you are to avoid any poodle aggression when your puppy grows up, then you should insure that it is properly socialized with people and other dogs within the frame of ages week 8 – week 14.

There really is no formula to judge when a poodle will go aggressive, there are many factors that ma cause it. Genetics and heredity certainly play an important role but are not always the reason for aggressive poodle behavior. It has been observed that dogs that have not been neutered or spayed are more prone to aggressive tendencies.

The single most important factor which may lead to aggressive poodle behavior is the environment a poodle lives in. A poodle will have a far more likely hood of developing aggression with age if its living conditions are poor, it has harsh masters, it doesn’t get to socialize much or has been intimidated or even attacked by another dog.

Another reason which can trigger poodle aggression is that it may feel the need to establish pack order. It will start out by testing for dominance by biting, posturing and displaying other aggressive tendencies. You should take the time to establish yourself as the master when the poodle is still a puppy and then maintain your position through out its adult hood. If it feels there is no master in the house then it will see a need to maintain order by displaying dominance. This doesn’t make it your enemy. It just means that it needs to be reminded that there is a master and that is you. Trust me a poodle will not resist your leadership and will be more than happy to follow you and still love you for being the master.

Stopping and Controlling Aggressive Poodle Behavior

After your poodle has sexually matured at about 14 months of age and is exhibiting aggression, then you should get to work right away to address this problem. The first step is to establish yourself as the pack leader. Grab my free report on how to do that if you’re having this problem. Secondly, don’t ever reward your poodle for acting aggressively. Even if its acting that way because its scared or frightened. You may have pity on the poor guy for being frightened and may want to calm him down with a treat. But remember if you do so, you will only reinforce the idea that this behavior gets rewarded and your poodle will continue with it with renewed interest.

If you allow the dog too much freedom around the house, it will display stronger aggressive tendencies. To control aggressive poodle behavior, you need to make sure that it senses the establishment of a strong leader in the household. Do it by controlling feeding times, walking times, ply times, etc.

In cases where a poodle is defensively aggressive, it may strike a person in fear, on the slightest provocation. This issue will usually come up if the dog has not been socialized properly. Do not let them near small children as the dog tends to reckon them as a direct threat. In a situation like this, its important that you take the poodle to attend training sessions or take it to a behaviorist who can gradually help the dog to calm down and return to normality by socializing it properly. If this is too expensive for you, get your self a good book to deal with aggression and implement closely what they teach. There are many good courses out there. One I particularly recommend is Secrets to Dog Training. You can get information about it by clicking here.

Aggressive poodle behavior is a problem that many poodle owners come across at some point in their poodle’s lives. Mainly because its hard to detect the root if you are not a professional. But you can have consolation in knowing that it can be controlled even with fully matured dogs. There is lots of good information that can help you with it. The book I mentioned above is a very good example of excellent information. One thing to take note of is that if your aggressive poodle  has gone to a point to where it has taken to violence, then you should very seriously consider hiring a local pro to intervene before someone gets seriously hurt and you have a lawsuit on your hands.
