DISADVANTAGES OF ASPIRIN FOR DOGS:
There are possible side effects if you let your dog take aspirin as a long term medication. Possible side effects would be intestinal problems and overdose of aspirin might lead to deterioration of the dog’s cartilages.
It is also very important to take precautionary measures to avoid leading your dog to fatal conditions. Necessary precautions are as follows:
- Different NSAID’s (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) should not be used altogether. Refrain from taking two or more of these drugs at the same time.
- Combining NSAID’s with corticosteroids might result to unpleasant effects. Corticosteroids are a class of steroid hormones.
- Using aspirin before a surgery is not recommended. Have at least a week of not taking aspirin before proceeding to surgeries.
- Medications for dogs differ from those that are for humans. Do not give human intended aspirins to dogs.
- Determine your dog’s allergies. Make sure that your dog is not allergic to aspirin to avoid serious results.
- Pre existing ailments might worsen when taken with aspirin. Do not use with dogs who experiences intestinal problems, bleeding, and other internal illnesses.
- In case of vomiting, appetite loss, diarrhea, and other drastic behavioral changes, discontinue use or consult the vet.
Aspirin is advisable as long as it is taken under a vet’s prescription and it is taken exactly the way the vet has advised. No drug can be taken with no precautionary measures and proper dosage. This means that in every medication we give our dogs, we should make sure that our dog was declared physically fit by the vet to take in certain drugs. It is also recommended to make your dog undergo regular checkups and laboratory tests to be sure that your dog has a normal and healthy body.
