Poodle Sitting While You’re On Vacation

Ok, this bit of advice is based on my experience with owning multiple poodles over a long period of time. Hope it helps.

Your poodle has become a member of the family by now, right? How do you suppose it feels when you go off and leave for an extended period of time? A little scared, confused and sad maybe.

Well here’s how to make it easier.

Poodle Sitting Tip # 1
If you have to leave the dog at the vet, be sure to take your poodle in a few days ahead of time for a friendly visit to the clinic. Yes, that’s right, take your poodle on a visit and give them a reward for being a good dog while there. It only takes a few minutes but helps them get comfortable that they can go just for a visit without having pain associated. I assure you the staff will understand because they love dogs and know how important it is to help them enjoy the visit. The treats help a lot too.

Poodle Sitting Tip # 2
Leave your poodle with a friend that the dog knows. A few days ahead of time take your dog over to the friends house and show your friend your dog training tips, how and when to dole out the treats. A lot of people who love animals may be willing to help out with a little baby sitting for your dog.

Poodle Sitting Tip # 3
Hire a dog sitter who’s also a house sitter. This works great because your poodle gets to stay in it’s own house while you’re gone AND you have extra security. Think how many college students need an extra gig to earn spending money or a next door neighbors child. It costs about $20-$25 a night which is also sometimes cheaper than staying at the vet.

Just remember, that the more relaxed you behave about leaving your dog, the more comfortable your poodle will feel. Have a great vacation!
