Poodle training is sometimes misunderstood by poodle owners.

There are a lot of myths floating around contradicting each other and further confusing readers who are looking

for good information on poodle training. When you are beginning to train your poodle, it is good idea to take the time to understand where you should start. It is worth every bit to take the time to understand what it is that your poodle needs in a training and then make the effort to go to different sources to learn how to give it to her. Even though poodles are very smart animals, they are after all… animals. Many poodle owners tend to think that their dog should know tricks by birth. You need to understand that the dog is an animal and it actually learns by observing and by reinforcement just like a human child does. Now while you can train poodles to do outstandingly intelligently tricks, it doesn’t just come right away. It takes time, diligence and a lot of training. To begin with, it simply reacts to your actions and quite simply wants to be accepted. So again, I want to re iterate it… while poodles can be trained to do very smart stuff, please don’t expect such intelligence right from the start. Once you have reached an advanced level of training with your poodle, then it’s very possible to train your poodle to do all sorts of amazing tricks to pop the eyeballs out of those who look at it perform. On a side note, I always say this… to avoid any negative behaviour, scolding or yelling at the dog doesn’t work. Instead punish them with a momentary lack of attention. Do not take my words out of context… the punishment I am suggesting here is to not give your dog attention just momentarily. I am not suggesting any physical punishments.

Core Poodle Training Tips

Now if you have been trying to look up poodle training or dog training on the internet, you would come across a whole spectrum of methods to achieve your ends. But when you drill down, there are really a few basics that all poodle training starts with and every poodle owner should consider.

Crate Training

This is not a punishment. Please don’t consider it a punishment because to your dog the crate is actually a home. Unless you give your poodle a different message, this is what the poodle will think. Therefore, please DO NOT use the crate to punish your dogs. It is a place for them to relax, retire to and to call home. Think for a minute how do you feel when you get in bed at night after a tired day. You feel relieved, safe, cosy and relaxed. After all that is the feeling a bedroom should give you. Crate is the same to your poodle. It is also a very good way to housebreak your dog, reduce barking and improve anxiety issues. So please do not use it for punishment as this confuses your dog and leads to issues. It is also a good idea to be in the home while your dog is in the crate as it helps them get used to the feeling.

Leash Training

this is another one of very important aspect of poodle training. Poodles are very lively and energetic animals and they need to use up this energy. Walks are a great way to vent that excess energy and help your poodle stay out of trouble. While talking about walks, a lot of poodle owners tend to have difficulties with walking their poodles as they get distracted with so many things going around them especially squirrels if you’re in a park. So every time your poodle pulls one the leash, the best thing you can do is teach them how to reach a controlled and a calm state. When in this controlled state, your dog will be able to focus and respond on your commands better without getting too excited. Most poodles with the leash pulling issues are allowed to have there own way with it, running outside and pulling you along. If they do that, just stop walking and make them sit beside you. Only until they obey your command will you resume the walk again. This will make them understand that the pulling action results in the walk to stop. They do not want that… so if they want to keep the walk going… they need to stop pulling on the leash!

The Alpha Position

Dogs are social animals and by instinct, they live in packs. They need protection for themselves. When they do not see other dogs in the house they assume that they are the alpha dog and thus in charge and responsible for protection of the pack. Unless you resolve this natural instinct to protect, they will be distracted. They do not know naturally that they need training. You as the owner need to inculcate that since day one that they need training. They do not know what you want from them until you teach them to understand that. You do that by doing the alpha dog training to teach your dog that you control the house and in charge of the protection. Once you do that, they will then relax, they will follow your training and commands and will stop worrying about who will protect them. This goes for all dogs and poodles are no exception.

Obedience Training

Whether your are training a puppy or an older poodle, the best source of obedience training tips is a obedience training class. These classes are designed to teach dog owners that are new, how to assume the alpha leadership position in their households and display authority over the new puppy. They also teach you how to give specific strong commands. This is definitely something you should consider.

The Importance of Consistency

This is one factor; all top poodle training professionals are in agreement about. Every poodle training tip you will come across from a pro will tell you that you need to be consistent with it. Like I pointed out in the beginning, a poodle may seem very smart (and they are in many ways) but they are still animals at the end of the day. Everything they learn and accomplish is through a repeated and consistent environment created by you, whether intentionally or unintentionally. If you only give them specific commands sometimes when you have the time, they will get confused and stop following your commands because they cannot associate your commands to their behavior patterns. Therefore consistency is the key. Once you set a rule for your poodle training, make sure everyone in the house follow it.
