Poodles bark for any number of reasons. They bark when they are angry. They bark when they are excited. They even bark when they are scared.  There could be quite a number of reasons for poodles to bark. See below for a list of various reasons why a poodle would bark.

How to Stop a Barking Poodles

Ninety percent of the times, poodles bark excessively and they can therefore be controlled. When ever this happens, you as the dog owner needs to determine if this behavior is warranted or not. If you conclude that your poodle’s barking needs to be controlled, ask yourself the following questions.

You dont want your poodle to bark like this

  • When does the poodle bark?
  • What is the poodle barking at?
  • Does the poodle have a specific trigger?

If your answers to the above questions tell you that your poodle is barking because it feels the need to protect is territory or is alarmed by something, simply telling the dog to stop won’t work. In fact it might lead to quite and opposite reaction particularly in cases of territorial barking and may lead to biting or other forms of aggression. Even though they may stop barking for the time being, the territorial issues will remain. Rather than taking the negative reinforcement route, you need make the poodle feel that it is not threatened and therefore does not feel that territorial urge to defend itself. This starts with you taking control of the entire household, being the Alpha Leader if the pack. Show your poodle that it’s you who is in charge of defending the territory. The second thing you need to do is simply not let you poodle see when his territory is being invaded. Draw your blinds so he cannot see the mailman, get an opaque fence so they cannot see outside the yard, and make sure they don’t have open access to the windows at any time.

The barking may be a sign of something much bigger if your poodle is suffering from anxiety issues. If they’re looking for you attention, the barking will continue until you return. This mostly occurs because you have rewarded such behavior in the past and they are now used to it that way. They are excited when you return home and you immediately attend to them. Instead of showering them with your attention immediately, you should ignore them for at least 10 – 15 minutes so that they stop connecting your return with attention. Finally, you need to teach your poodle how to speak and be quiet to stop them from barking. This can be done by creating a command that allows you to control their behavior. Your Poodle will learn to control the barking when it is not necessary. A benefit of this is that, if there is an intruder or something you want your dog to bark at, they will still alert you. Your barking poodle does not have to be a menace within your neighbor hood that it has become. Learn to control it early and you won’t have to worry about your neighbors banging down your door when you return home from work everyday.
